Common terms used across peptide research, testing, and documentation.
- Peptide
- A short chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds, often functioning as a signaling molecule in biological systems.
- Lyophilization
- Freeze-drying process used to remove water from a peptide, producing a stable powder for storage and transport.
- Reconstitution
- The process of dissolving a lyophilized peptide in a suitable solvent to prepare a working solution for research.
- HPLC
- High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, an analytical method used to quantify the purity of a peptide.
- Mass Spectrometry (MS)
- An analytical technique that confirms the identity and molecular weight of a compound.
- Purity
- The proportion of the target peptide relative to impurities, typically expressed as a percentage from HPLC analysis.
- Certificate of Analysis (COA)
- A document reporting the analytical test results for a specific production lot.
- Molecular Weight
- The mass of one molecule of a compound, usually expressed in grams per mole (g/mol).
- CAS Number
- A unique numeric identifier assigned to a chemical substance by the Chemical Abstracts Service.
- Sequence
- The specific order of amino acids that defines a peptide's structure, written using single-letter or three-letter codes.
- Bacteriostatic Water
- Sterile water containing a preservative, commonly used in research to reconstitute lyophilized peptides.
- Research Use Only (RUO)
- A designation indicating a product is intended solely for laboratory research and not for human or veterinary use.
- Endotoxin
- A bacterial contaminant screened for in applicable research materials to help ensure sample integrity.
- Aliquot
- A measured sub-portion of a solution, often prepared to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
- Stability
- A measure of how well a compound retains its integrity over time under given storage conditions.
- Desiccant
- A drying agent used to protect lyophilized peptides from moisture during storage.
- Net Peptide Content
- The actual mass of peptide in a sample after accounting for water and counter-ions such as acetate.
- Acetate Content
- Residual acetate from peptide synthesis, reported as part of full characterization.
